Heat Transfer Flashcards
Law of Conservation Energy
Energy cannot be created nor destroyed just transformed (under normal conditions).
Heat
Thermal energy that flows due a difference in tempeture. Heat flows from hot to cold.
Heat Transfer
A method by which heat flows (conduction, convection, radiation).
Conduction
Heat transfer within or between solid objects.
Convection
Heat transfer into or out of fluids.
Radiation
Heat transfer due to packets of energy called photons that can travel through many substances, even empty space.
Insulator
A material through which energy (electrical, thermal, or sound) cannot be easily transferred.
Conductor
A material through heat (electical, thermal or sound) can be easily transferred.
Temperature
A measure of the average speed of all particals.
Thermal energy
The total energy of all particals in an object.
