Heat stress monitoring program Flashcards
Define the meaning of heat stress?
A combination of air temperature, thermal radiation, humidity, airflow and work load which stress the body as it attempt to regulate temperature.
Hot stress becomes excessive when the body’s capability to adjust is exceeded resulting in an increase of body temp. This can cause heat death.
Name the Factors that cause heat stress?
Thermal radiation
Ventilation airflow
Humidity
Air/sea water temperatures
Which are types of thermal radiation?
Sun heat source ( incinerators, engines, generators, laundry dryers.
Ventilation airflow factors
Forced air systems
Forces exhaust system( removes stagnant or increased concentration of hazardous fumes or contamination such as red devil blower
Humidity factors ?
Steam leaks
Bilge water
Condensation
Air/sea water temperature factors
refrigeration units
engines
generators
evaporators for fresh water consumption
What is acclimatization?
The act of becoming accustomed to temperature or new environment
The body becomes more efficient in coping with heat stress
How does acclimatization occurs ?
Gradually, usually after 3 weeks or more
current health status and use of medications that may alter physiological body changes
G6PD Sickle cell trait exercise and fluid intake medication alcohol intake lack of sleep drugs
What does PHEL stands for?
Physiological Heat stress level
What is the PHEL chart ?
A set of curves that compare the WBGT index and the degree of efforts or work rate to determine the maximum permissible exposure to the heat stress
Whos stablish the PHEL curves and work rates ?
The industrial hygienist
Which are the type of operations PHEL is assigned ?
Routine operations
non routine operations
ECC exercises
Heavy work load (assigned stay time using PHEL VI)
What is stay time ?
Maximum allow time personnel may work in heat stress conditions at a given work load
What is recovery time ?
Is define as a minimum of twice the stay time as determined by the PHEL chart or 4 hours whichever is shorter
