Heat Stress Flashcards
What manual is the Heat Stress Program under?
5100.19(series) vol 1 part 1 chapter B2
What does PHEL stand for?
Physiological Heat Exposure Limit
How many PHEL Curves are there?
6, ranging from light (PHEL Curve 1) to heavy work (PHEL Curve 6)
Which PHEL Curve do we use?
It varies, inside the booth is PHEL Curve 1, while inside the space is usually PHEL Curve 2 and 3. The scullery can be a PHEL Curve 5 and during heavy work in the plant it could be a PHEL Curve 6.
What does WBGT stand for?
Wet Bulb Globe Thermometer
What is the WBGT?
An instrument combining the effects of the dry bulb, wet bulb, wet bulb and globe thermometers to produce an index number used in conjunction with the PHEL Chart to indicate allowable exposure times.
What type of WBGT do we use?
Questemp 48N
Define Dry Bulb (DB).
Air temperature as measured with a thermometer shielded from radiation
Define Wet Bulb (WB).
The temperature is measured with an ordinary thermometer except a wet wick is fitted over the bulb and air flow passes over the wick. This is measuring the quantity of water vapor (humidity).
Define Globe Thermometer.
Copper sphere painted flat black which contains a dry bulb thermometer which measures radiant heat.
Define Psychrometer.
An instrument for measuring humidity utilizing a wet and dry thermometer.
What does Time Weighted Mean (TWM)?
TWM is a math formula that is intended for use in especially hot environments where reduced stay times have been imposed on watch standers. If an air-conditioned booth or cooler space is available for personnel to spend time in the cooler climate and afford some relief from the heat in the space the TWM may be utilized maximizing time in space.
What effect does stack gas have on a space and stay time?
It reduces stay time by 66% (2/3). Exposure limits must be reduced if at least 2 of the 4 following conditions exist:
Eyes watering and/or burning
Difficulty breathing
Tingling or numbness of the tip of the tongue, nose, fingertips and/or toes
Generalized sensation of mild intoxication without alcohol consumption in last 24 hours
What is the difference between Heat Stroke and Heat Exhaustion?
Heat Stroke is hot and dry skin, constructed pupils, elevated blood pressure and temperature, reduced breathing.
Heat Exhaustion is classy and pale skin, dilated pupils, normal blood pressure and temperature, profuse respiration.
What actions to take for a Heat Casualty?
Move person to a cool and relaxed environment with plenty of rest and fluids. If they’re collapsed, massage their extremities and elevate their feet.
