Heat & Heat Transfer Flashcards
What is thermal energy?
The total energy of a system that is dependent on the K.E. of the particles in the system, the P.E. of the material, and the total number of particles.
What is heat?
It’s the amount of thermal energy that’s transferred from a region of higher temperature to a region of lower temperature.
Can heat make something colder?
No
What is conduction?
It’s a transfer of thermal energy between materials by the collisions of particles.
What’s an example of conduction?
Toaster metal heating up bread
What would happen if particles with different temperatures collide?
The particles with higher K.E. transfer energy to particles with lower K.E.
What is radiation?
The transfer of thermal energy from one material to another by electromagnetic waves.
What is one transfer of thermal energy that all matter transfers thermal energy by?
Radiation
Do warmer objects emit more radiation than colder objects?
Yes
What is convection?
The transfer of thermal energy by movement of particles from one material to another.
What happens to the cooler air when hot air rises?
It sinks
In what states of matter does convection occur in?
It occurs in liquids and gases.
