Heat Exchangers Flashcards
What is convection?
Heat transfer through a gas or liquid.
What is conduction?
Heat transfer through a solid.
What are the threes basic means of heat transfer?
Conduction
Convection
Radiation
What is radiation?
Best explained as electromagnetic waves moving across a space, no medium of transport and travels across a vacuum.
What are the four flow path arrangements? Describe each.
Parallel flow, both fluids flowing in the same direction.
Counter flow, fluids flow against each other. Most efficient.
Crossflow, produces more turbulence, many exchanger designs incorporate both counter flow and cross flow.
Mixed flow, common in exchangers with baffles that cause the flows to switch between parallel and counter flow.
