Heat Energy Flashcards
In what 3 ways does heat move?
Conduction, Convection or Radiation
What is Conduction?
Conduction of heat occurs within an object as higher temperatures move towards cooler areas.
EG. Heat traveling up the copper pipe whist soldering.
Boiler castings becoming warm when operating.
What is a good conductor?
Copper
Aluminium
Iron
Glass
What is a bad conductor?
Air
Polysturene
Wood
Water
What is the equation for thermal conductivity?
heat x distance / area x temperature difference
What is the rate at which material will transfer heat to known as?
Coeffieient of theraml conductivity
What is the ‘U Value’?
Buildings are rated on their thermal efficency with this same measurement.
What is the formula to work out heat conductivty?
W = Area (m) x U Vakue (w/m/K) x Temperature Difference
When can convection take place?
In a fluid or gas.
How does convection occur?
It occurs because when molecules are heated they heat and rise and then they are cool they fall.
What is a joule?
Joule is the ammount of energy trasngered when a force of one newton acts on an object in the direction of the forces motion.
