Heat and Tempurature Topic 7-8 Flashcards
8 sources of thermal energy
- chemical energy
- electrical energy
- mechanical energy
- geothermal energy
- solar energy
- wind
- nuclear
- fossil fuels
Think of- Class Eats Mega Greens So We Not Fat
Chemical Energy
-CHEMICAL ENERGY
- stored thermal energy
- when burned produces big amount of thermal energy
Example: woof & coal
Electrical energy
-can be produced in lots of ways
-Negative impacts- wildlife and habitats, livliehood of people who work in areas
Example: hydroelectric dams crate energy by falling water
Mechanical energy
-Forces that push/pull objects
- release thermal energy (FRICTION)
Example: car brakes, tires, bike pump, skidding tires
Geothermal Energy
-natural source of thermal energy
-harnessed to produce electrical energy
Example: Volcanoes,hot springs,geysers
Solar Energy
- energy from sun
- clean source
- will never run out
- times not available (night/storms)
- two forms (active/passive)
Wind energy
-energy of moving air
- results from convection currents through solar energy(heating and cooling air)
Examples: wind turbines to produce electricity
Nuclear energy
-Energy to split atoms
- massive amounts of energy released
- when malfunction disaster can strike (Chernobyl)
5 plants in Canada- 3 in Ontario- 1 in Quebec-1 in New Brunswick
Passive solar heating
Used materials in a structure to absorb, store and release
Example: wall of windows in a house, greenhouse
Active solar heating
Use solar collectors along with fans to distributes stored thermal energy, usually in a liquid, throughout a home/building
