Heat And Temperature 7-8 Flashcards
What are 7 alternative sources of energy we can use instead of fossil fuels
Chemical energy Electrical energy Mechanical energy Geothermal energy Solar energy Wind Nuclear energy
What is chemical energy?
Stored thermal energy. It’s a thing that when burned can produce large amounts of terms energy
Exp. wood and coal
Electrical energy
Can be produced in many ways. Hydroelectric dams use the energy of falling water to produce electrical energy.
What is a negative side affect of electro energy
It has a negative impact on wildlife
Mechanical energy
Forces that push or pull objects often release thermal energy
Geothermal energy
Natural source of thermal energy from the earth
Can be used to produce electrical energy
Solar energy
Energy from the sun is a clean source and will never run out. There are times when it is not available such as when it is raining on solar panels
What are the two kinds of solar energy
Passive: when the sun is out on a wall of windows it warms your house
Passive energy uses materials in s structure to absorb tote and release
Active: use solar collectors along with fans to distribute stored thermal energy usually in a liquid throughout a home
What are t o problems with fossil fuels
Non-renewable resource
When burned produces carbon dioxide which overloads our co2 recycling systems
What is global warming?
A green house gases and carbon dioxide trap thermal energy above the earth causing and increase in overall temperature
Cogeneration
The process of using thermal pollution (waste heat that accidentally warms the environment) to generate electricity or heat buildings
Why does Alberta continue to use fossil fuels
There is an abundance of fossil fuels in Alberta and this helps with our economy. It produces 80% of our electrical energy
What are 3 ways we can save money and energy at home
Shorten shower time
Turn lights off
Turn tv off
What are refrigerants
Liquids that evaporate really easy at low temperatures to remove thermal energy from food
What are som dangers associated with thermal energy
-fires Burns Forest fires are dangerous and cause pollution Drought Flood
