HEAT Flashcards
Define temperature
a measure of how cold or hot a substance is
Define Heat
a form of energy that is transferred from one region or object to another region or object, due to difference in temperature.
SI unit of temperature
kelvin (K)
SI unit of heat
Joule
Other unit of temperature
Degree Celsius C°/ Degree Fahrenheit °F
Other unit of Heat
Calories/ British thermal unit (Btu)
Heat transfers from where to where?
from higher region to colder region
Formula of density
mass/volume
When volume increases what happens to the density
volume decreases
When volume decreases what happens to the volume
volume increases
What is heat transfer?
when 2 objects in contact, heat energy is transferred from the hotter object to colder object.
Define Expansion
It is when a substance is heated resulting in it gain heat and expand resulting in its volume to expand.
Define contraction
It is when a substance is cooled it loses heat and contracts
Define conduction
Conduction is the transfer of heat energy without the physical movement of medium
Which state of matter conducts heat the best. Why?
Solids are better conductor of heat than fluids (water ad air). As the particles between solids are more closer thus the particles will gain heat quickly. Not only that fluids are a poor conductor of heat.
