Heat Flashcards
Define heat transfer and mention how it occurs
Occurs from where there is more energy (higher temperature) to a place with less energy (low temperature) 3 ways heat transfer occurs - conduction - convection - radiation
Give an example of heat transfer
In a hot bath, heat transfers from the hot water to the cool air ( the air around the bath is warmer)
Define heat conduction
Direct contact from our hands through a conductor
Give an example of heat conduction
Touching a kettle when it boils
Define heat convection
When moving fluids (liquid and gases) rise and fall due to differences in density
Warmer fluids are less dense colder fluids are moe dense
Give an example of heat convection
When boiling water on a stove or while making tea or while boiling an egg
Define heat radiation
The transfer of energy in the form of electromagnetic radiation
Give an example of heat radiation
X-rays, gamma rays, and microwaves are other forms too
- produced by the sun, instead of light bulbs)
What direction does heat transfer
From hot to cold
What is the difference between heat and temperature
Heat is a transfer of thermal energy and temperature is a property the object exhibits
