Heart valves Flashcards
what are the two atrio - ventricular valves called?
tricuspid valve
bicuspid valve
what is the av valve on the right side of the heart called?
tricuspid valve
what is the av valve on the left side of the heart called?
bicuspid valve
what is the role of valves?
- ensures blood flows in one direction through the heart as they only open in one direction
- prevents backflow of blood
why are valves able to open and close?
due to pressure differences on either side of the valve
where are av valves located?
between atria and ventricles
what do av valves do?
prevent backflow of blood from ventricles to atria during ventricular systole
describe the pressure when av valves are open
greater pressure in atria than ventricles
describe the pressure when av valves are closed
greater pressure in ventricles than atria
where are semi - lunar valves located?
base of arteries leaving the heartw
what do semi - lunar valves do?
prevent blood from returning to the ventricle during diastole (resting heart)
describe the pressure when semi - lunar valves are open?
greater pressure in ventricles than arteries
describe the pressure when semi - lunar valves are closed?
greater pressure in arteries than ventricles
