Heart Failure & Cardiomyopathy Flashcards
Why do you get peripheral oedema?
Increased hydrostatic pressure in the venous system pushes fluid into the surrounding tissues
How does Aspirin work?
Anti-platelet drug used in prophalaxis of thrombus in atheroscleorisis
How does Ramipril work
How does Bisoprolol work?
Decreases sympathetic activity by competively inhibiting the B2 recpetors, preventing adrenaline & noradrenaline from binding
How does Atorvastatin work?
Why does JVP elevate in heart failure?
High venous pressure due to back up of blood flow into the heart
Left sided heart failure increases hydrostatic pressure in pulmonary veins causing less flow in the right side, increasing the pressure
Explain Ascites in Heart failure
Increased hydrostatic pressure in the hepatic vein causing liver damage and in severe cases cirrohsis
How does furesimide work?
What does NT-proBNP measure?
How does Spironolactone work?
Why is Troponin raised in
What might ventricular hypertrophy look like on an ECG?
Tall QRS complexs
Left - lateral leads
Deep S waves
What could you hear with HCM?
- Ejection systolic murmur loudest at the left sternal edge, louder standing/exercising, quieter when supine/squatting
Due to left ventricular outflow tract obstruction - Pansystolic murmur - loudest at the apex & radiating to the axilla due to systolic anterior motion of the mitral valve
- Rare - diastolic murmur due to aortic regurgitation
