Heart Failure Flashcards
1
Q
What is heart failure?
A
Cardiac output is inadequate for the body’s requirements
2
Q
What are the key classifications of heart failure? Define them.
A
- Systolic failure - inability of the ventricle to contract normally, resulting in reduced cardiac output. Ejection fraction is <40%
- Diastolic failure - inablity of the ventricle to relax and fill normally, causing increased filling pressures. Typically EF is >50%. This is termed HFpEF
3
Q
What are causes of these types of HF?
- Systolic failure
- Diastolic failure
- Left venricular failure
- Right ventricular failure
- Acute heart failure
- Low-output heart failure
- High output heart failure
A
- Systolic failure - IHD, MI Cardiomyopathy
