Heart Diseases Flashcards
What’s a thrombosis?
If an atheroma breaks through it interrupts the blood flow and forms a rough surface that interrupts flow
This may form a blood clot (thrombus)
It can block vessel or restrict blood flow
The region of tissue deprived of oxygen dies
What’s an atheroma?
Accumulation of low density lipoproteins in the wall of an artery
They bulge into the lumen, narrowing it
So blood flow is reduced
What’s an aneurysm ?
Atheroma also weaken artery walls
The weakened points swell to form ballon like blood filled structures (aneurysm)
They frequently burst and lead to a lack of blood to a region served by that artery
What’s a myocardial infarction?
Heart attack, a reduced supply of oxygen to the heart muscle
A blockage in the coronary arteries
