Heart Diagnostic Imaging Flashcards
x-ray of vessels after injection of a contrast medium to show plaques in the cardiac vessels and level of occlusion
Angiogram
using real time US to visualize the structure and function of the carotid arteries to screen for blockages and risk for stroke/evaluate stent placement
Carotid ultrasound
continuous x-ray procedure to visualize the heart and lungs. Has been largely replaced due to high radiation dose
Fluoroscopy
radioactive material is introduced that cumulates in areas of higher chemical activity i.e. heart disease or cancer
PET scans
a catheter inserted in a peripheral artery is advanced to the coronary arteries and a contrast is injected to allow imaging of stenosis or occlusion of the vessels. Also, a type of procedure in which a stent, angioplasty etc. may be performed.
Cardiac catheterization
used to diagnosis and evaluate ischemic heart disease and MI Thallium is used to identify blood flow & areas of stress-induced ischemia. Used with exercise test
Myocardial Perfusion Imaging
noninvasive test that uses ultrasound to assess internal structures: size of chambers, wall thickness, EF, movement of valves, septum, and abnormal wall movement
Echocardiogram
inserted through vessels into right side of heart. Measures central venous pressure, pulmonary artery pressure, and pulmonary capillary wedge pressures
Central Line (Swan-Ganz Catheter)
reveal abnormalities of lung fluids, overall cardiac shape and size, and aneurysm
CXR
