Describe the borders of the heart
Right border:
Right 3CC 1cm from sternal border to right 6CC 1cm from sternal border
Inferior border: Right 6th CC to left 5th ICS at MAL
Left border:
2ICS 2.5cm from sternal border
to 5ICS medial to MCL
Superior border: left 2nd CC to right 3CC
How would you palpate the apex beat?
Identify sternal angle and palpate left 2nd rib to 5th rib
Go to 5th intercostal space at MCL
Start laterally from MAL and go towards MCL
Use index-ring finger and align middle ringer with 5th intercostal space
Describe the surface markings of the right internal jugular vein
Note: ASK PATIENT TO TURN HEAD TO CORRECT SIDE
IJV runs lateral to right common carotid artery, from SCJ to lobe of right ear
