Heart Flashcards
What are the top two chambers called?
Atria (singular)
Atrium (plural)
How many chambers are there in the heart?
4
What are the bottom two chambers called?
Ventricle
What vessels leads to the heart?
Veins
What vessels leave the heart?
Arteries
What vein enters the right atrium?
Vena Cava
What vein enters the left atrium
Pulmonary vein
What valve is between the right atrium and the right ventricle
Tricuspid valve
What valve is between the left atrium and the left ventricle
Bicuspid valve
As the blood leaves the right ventricle what valve does it travel through?
Pulmonary semi-lunar valve
As the blood leaves the left ventricle what valve does it travel through?
Aortic semi-lunar valve
What blood enters the right side of the heart?
Deoxygenated
What blood enters the left side of the heart?
Oxygenated
When the blood leaves the right side of the heart which artery does it leave via?
Pulmonary artery
When the blood leaves the left side of the heart which artery does it leave via?
Aorta
From the pulmonary artery where does the blood travel?
To the lungs
From the aorta where does the blood travel?
Rest of the body
What is the purpose of the valves?
The purpose is to ensure blood flows in one direction
What is the middle section between the chambers called?
Septum
What is the muscle in the heart called?
Cardiac muscle
Why is the atria muscle thinner than ventricle muscle
Because the atria only pump blood to the ventricle
Why is the left side of the heart muscle thicker than the right side?
Because the right side pumps blood to the lungs while the left side has to pump the blood much further - to the rest of the body
What are the electric pulses in the heart caused by?
The pacemaker
