Heart Flashcards
Arteries
Tube like structures that transports fluids like oxygen, nutrients and hormones through our bodies
Aorta
Largest blood vessel and main artery
Carries blood away from the heart to the rest of your body
Pulmonary artery
Carries blood from the right ventricle to the lungs for oxygenation
Pulmonary veins
Right superior, right inferior, left superior, left inferior
Carries oxygenated blood from the lungs to the left atrium of the heart
Left atrium
Top left chamber of the heart
Receives blood returning to the heart from the pulmonary veins
Mitral valve
Prevents back flow of blood as it is pumped from the left atrium to the left ventricle
Left ventricle
Bottom left chamber
Receives blood from the left atrium and pumps it to the aorta
Purine fibres
Muscle fibres located at the base of the heart
Transmit impulses from the atrioventricular node to the ventricles of the heart, contact
Septum
Cardiac impulses are carried down the septum to the ventricles of the heart
Separates the lower chambers of the heart
Inferior vena cava
One of the largest veins
Located in the lower back
Returns de-oxygenated blood from the legs, back, abdomen and pelvis to the right atrium
Right ventricle
Bottom right of the heart
Receives blood from the right atrium and pumps it to the main pulmonary artery
Tricuspid valve
Between the right atrium and the right ventricle
Prevents the blood flow back into the right atrium
Right atrium
Top right of the heart
Receives blood returning to the heart from the superior and the inferior vena cava
Sino-atrial node
Pace maker of the heart upper part of the hearts right atrium
Controls the heart by sending impulses through the heart muscle
Superior vena cava
One of the largest veins in the body
Located in the upper chest
Returns deoxygenated blood from the head, arm and chest to the right atrium
