Heart Flashcards
Flow of blood through the heart
LA, LV, Aorta, body/tissue, vena cava, RA, RV, pulmonary artery, lungs, pulmonary veins, LA
What happens to RBC in lungs?
RBC gives up CO2 and accepts oxygen
What type of blood is on each side of the heart?
Left side- oxygenated
Right side- deoxygenated
Cardiac Output (CO)
The amount of blood the heart pumps over time.
CO for average adult
5 liters per minute (all the blood in the body)
Stroke volume
Amount of blood the ventricles pump with each beat
Heart Rate
Beats per minute
CO formula
CO= SV * HR
What does exercise do to SV and HR
Increases both
What regulates heart rate?
Cardiac center of medulla oblongata
Parts of cardiac center and their functions
sympathetic-speeds up heart rate. uses norepinephrine.
parasympathetic- slows heart rate. Uses vagus nerve and acetylcholine.
What affects stroke volume?
Preload
contractility
afterload
Preload
volume of blood in the ventricles.
Contractility
how hard the ventricles contract for preload.
Afterload
the pressure in the great arteries that the ventricles have to push against
