- Speaking: Babbles (monosyllabic) ‘da’, ‘ma’, ‘la’
- Hearing: Turns to sounds out of their sight

- Speaking: 2-3 words (mama, dada)
- Hearing: responds to name

- Follow one-step instructions (e.g. pass the brick)

- String at least 2 words to make simple phrase

How is hearing assessed:
- at birth
- at school age
A
- newborns: via OTO-ACOUSTIC EMISSIONS.
- If abnormal then, BRAINSTEM -
EVOKED POTENTIALS is carried out.
- If abnormal then, BRAINSTEM -
- school-age children: PURE TONE AUDIOMETRY is the modality of choice
