Hearing loss Flashcards
1
Q
What is presbycusis?
A
Age-related sensorineural hearing loss - affects high pitched sounds first. Hearing loss occurs gradually and symmetrically.
2
Q
What are the risk factors for presbycusis?
A
- Age
- Male
- FHx
- Loud noise exposure
- Diabetes
- HTN
- Ototoxic medications
- Smoking
3
Q
What is the presentation of presbycusis?
A
- Loss of high-pitched sounds which can make speech difficult to hear and understand, particularly in loud environments
- Associated tinnitus in some cases
- Can lead to increased risk of dementia
4
Q
What is the investigation for presbycusis?
A
Audiometry - sensorineural, worse hearing loss at higher frequencies
5
Q
What is the management options for presbycusis?
A
- Optimising environment
- Hearing aids
- Cochlear implant
6
Q
What are the features of otosclerosis?
A
- 20-40yrs
- Conductive deafness
- Tinnitus
- Affects lower pitched sounds more than high-pitched
- Perceive their own voice as loud so talk quieter
- FHx
7
Q
What are the investigations for otosclerosis?
A
- Otoscopy is normal
- Rinne’s test - conductive hearing loss
- Weber’s test - normal if otosclerosis is bilateral
8
Q
What is the management for otosclerosis?
A
- Conservative - hearing aids
- Stapedectomy or spaedotomy
