Hearing and Noise Flashcards
What is hearing measured with?
An Audiometer
What is the role of the outer ear?
Collects sound waves and transmit to ear drum or tympanic membrane
What is the role of the middle ear?
Transmit or conduct sound using vibration energy.
Cochlear tube is full of fluid (T OR F).
True
What does the vibration of the oval window do?
The vibration of the oval window sets up vibration in the fluid which makes the free ended nerves flow the same frequency.
Define Sound.
The pressure vibration of certain frequency picked up by the ear.
What are the two primary attributes to sound?
Frequency and amplitude
What is frequency measured in?
Hz
What does Hz mean?
Cycles per second
What is a normal range of frequency?
20-20,000 cps
Define Amplitude.
The amount of sound at a location away from the source (pressure and intensity) and the overall ability of the source to emit sound (power).
What are the 3 words associated with Amplitude?
Pressure, Intensity, and Power
Other than hearing noises and sounds, what are ears also responsible for?
Balance, sense of acceleration, and sense of motion sickness
What do audiograms do to measure hearing?
Test the air pathway in the ear and give total loss.
Can hearing losses be temporary and permanent?
Yes
How often should audiograms be performed?
Annually
How many dB is a quiet library?
30 dB
How many dB is a quiet office?
50 dB
How can we determine machine noise?
Measure the noise level with the machine running, and the noise level while the machine is off. The difference is the machine noise.
When calculating machine noise, how many dB is too high in order to get an accurate measurement?
> 3 dB
What are the two primary effects of noise?
Comfort and annoyance, and performance.
