Hearing anatomy Flashcards
What are the structures of the outer ear?
Auricle
Helix
Tragus
Lobule
Ear canal
What are the structures of the middle ear?
Tympanic membrane
Ossicles - malleus, incus, and stapes
Tensor tympani
Stapedius
Eustachian tube
What are the structures of the inner ear?
Vestibular apparatus
Cochlea - scala vestibuli, scala tympani, scala media (houses the organ corti).
What is tonotopic organization and how is the cochlea organized?
The tonotopic organization is where different areas of the cochlea respond to different frequencies of sound.
Where is the primary auditory cortex?
Temporal lobe and this is where the final process of hearing takes place.
What does each part of a sound wave represent?
Amplitude determines its loudness. The length is the distance between two waves and affects the wave’s frequency (which determines the pitch sound)
How is hearing loss catergorized?
Mild, moderate, severe, or profound
