Healthy Growth of Trees Flashcards
1
Q
Requirements for Healthy Tree Growth?
A
- Adderquate space
- Free From competition
- Sufficient Sunlight
- Sufficient Water
- Atmospheric Factors
- Mineral Elements and Soil reaction
- Appropreate temperatures
- other considerations
2
Q
Adderquate space
A
- Nothing obstructing Canopy Growth as will require heavy pruning if there are obstructions such as overhead cables
- it is estimated 300 to 400 cubic meters are required to support a medium-sized shade tree
- restricted rooting zones make the tree more vanerable to draught insect and fungi attacks and diseases. There is also less anchorage
3
Q
Sufffcient light
A
Plants require sunlight for photosythesis, without it they would not be able to produce the glucose they need to survive, even with too little sunlight this can cause discolouration of the leaves as they would not be able to produce te green pigment chlorphyll.
4
Q
Sufficeint Water
A
- essential for plant growth and photosynthesis
- most common cause of death in plants
5
Q
Atmospheric Factors
A
- all living plant cells must respire in oder to provide enery for the chemical reactions that occur within the cell and as such, oxygen is essential to stay alive.
- Compact urban soils are notouriously bad for being oxygen deffcient, in extreme cases trees and shrubs can suddenly die due to lack of oxygen.
- The best way to prevent injury from atmospheric contaminents is to use polluntant resistant plants in areas known to be low in air quality.
