Healthcare research Flashcards
- To understand what is healthcare research
- To describe the differences between research and clinical audit and service evaluation
- To understand the basic requirements to be met prior to embarking on a research project and the rationale for these?
- To understand what comprises ‘good evidence’ in healthcare
.
What is a clinical audit
An audit is a way understand whether a service is meeting defined standards of best practice
It’s designed to answer the question “does this service reach a predetermined standard?”
What is a service evaluation
A way to define or measure current practice within a service
It’s designed to answer the question “what standard does this service achieve?
Differences between research and clinical audit and service evaluation
Clinical Audit and Service Evaluation examine how standard care is delivered locally
Whereas healthcare research is to derive generalisable new knowledge
Basic requirements to be met prior to embarking on a research project
Study design Facilities Scientific peer review Prepare study documentation Research sponsor/funding Protocol Register on public database Statutory approvals Ethics approval
Why does a research project need a research governance framework
Improves research quality and safeguards the public by:
- enhancing ethical and scientific quality
- promoting good practice
- reducing adverse incidents and ensuring lessons are learned
What kind of things does an ethics committee review for a research project
Relevance of trial Trial design Risks and benefits Protocol Suitability of the investigator and supporting staff Quality of the facilities
Who else has to approve a research project other than ethics committee
Research and development
What do research and development do
Ensure research is conducted to high scientific, ethical and financial standards
Provide guidance to researchers undertaking non-commercial & commercial research
