Autonomy
the right/condition of self-government
Beneficence
an act of charity, mercy, and kindness with a strong connotation of doing good to others including moral obligations
Bioethics
the study of ethical, social, and legal issues that arise in biomedical research
Breach of duty
when a person’s conduct fails to meet an applicable standard of care
Code of ethics
a guide of principles designed to help professionals conduct business honestly and with integrity
Criminal law
system of laws concerned with crimes and the punishment of individuals who commit crimes
Defamation of Character
communicating of false messages in order to cause severe harm to another person’s reputation
Ethical dilemma
a problem in the decision-making process between two possible options, neither of which is absolutely acceptable from an ethical perspective
Ethics
examines the rational justification for our moral judgments; studies what is morally right or wrong, just or unjust
Euthanasia
painless killing of a patient suffering from an incurable and painful disease or in an irreversible coma. The practice is illegal in most countries
Healthcare ethics committee
a body of persons established by a hospital or health care institution and assigned to consider, debate, study, take action on, or report on ethical issues that arise in patient care
Informed consent
permission granted in the knowledge of the possible consequences, typically that which is given by a patient to a doctor for treatment with full knowledge of possible risk
Living Will
written statement detailing a persons desires regarding their medical treatment
Malpractice
improper, ilegal, or negligent professional activity or treatment, especially by a medical practitioner, lawyer ,or public official
