primary prevention
health promotion and preventing the development of disease processes or injury.
secondary prevention
identify an illness, reverse or reduce its severity and return person to maximum health asap.
focus on screening for early detection of disease.

tertiary prevention
begins after an illness is diagnosed and treated, with the goal of reducing disability and rehabilitate patients with maximum level of functioning.
examples of primary
immunization clinics, family planning services, providing poison control information, accident prevention education
examples of secondary
pap smears, mammograms, screenings (blood pressure, cholesterol, glaucoma, HIV, skin cancer), dressing change, administering medications
examples of tertiary
patient attending physical therapy, a hospice nurse visits a client in the hospice house, rehabilitation, surgical treatment, therapies
preventive care
stress management, use of seat belts, smoking cessation, etc
knowledgable and engaged customers
including clients in their plans of care, providing clients access to their health records, etc.
