wellness
dynamic physical, mental, social and spiritual well being– enabling a person to achieve full potential and have an enjoyable life
disease
abnormal, medically defined changes in structure or function of human body
illness
individual’s experience– SUBJECTIVE perception or lack of physical or mental well being, and consequent inability to function normally in social roles
illness behaviour
individuals ACTIONS in response to their illness, including whether they seek health care and whether they comply with subsequent recommendations
sickness
socially and culturally held conceptions of health conditions that may influence how the patient reacts
impairment
any loss or abnormality of psychological, physiological or anatomical structure or fnuction
disability
any restriction or lack of ability to perform an activity within the range considered normal for a human being
handicap
disadvantage for an individual arising from impairment and disability
health equity
opportunity to attain full health potential– no disadvantages
equity assumes 3 elements
- equality– women have same opportunities as men
- fairness– black person should get job because qualifications, not because of race
- avoidability– recognition that something can be done when inequity arises
