What does the Surveying Safely 2018 Standard set out:

What is the difference between a hazard and a risk?
A hazard is something with the potential to cause harm.
A risk is the likelihood of the hazard causing harm and how severe the outcome would be.

What are some key relating to visiting premises and sites included in the Surveying Safely - Health and Safety Principles for Property Professionals, Second Edition?
Include travel arrangements, lone working, PPE.
- Tell someone where you are going and when you leave.
- Wear appropriate protective clothing (High visibility jacket, protective footwear etc)
- Sign in and out of a building or construction site, and receive an induction.
- Consider is it safe to inspect alone.
- Check dates tag if going on scaffolding
- Wear non-slip sole shoes/boots when going up a ladder.

What is the Health and Safety at Work 1974 Act?
It is UK legislation which outlines an employer’s duty to ensure, so far as reasonably practicable, the health, safety and welfare at work of all employees.
It is policed by the Health and Safety Executive as a criminal offence with fines and/or imprisonment.
What does the Health & Safety at Work Act ensure employers must do?
The act ensures employers must report injuries and dangerous occurrences (1995).
Must undertake, record, and regularly review a risk assessment (1999 regulations).
Hold detailed H&S on site.
Define a hazard?
A hazard refers to anything that has the potential to cause harm.
(e.g. used needles - they are a biological hazard with the potential to cause infections from blood-borne disease - HIV, Hepatitis B & C ).
Define a risk?
The probability/likelihood that someone will be harmed.
(e.g. the likelihood of someone coming into contact with the needle and suffering harm, such as receiving a needle-stick injury leading to infection).
What Legislation is in place for Health and Safety?
The Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.
PPE at Work Regulations, 2022.
What is PPE at Work Regulations 2022?
It is an amendment to the original Personal Protective Equipment at Work Regulations 1992, which came into effect in April 2022 and extends the employer’s duty to ensure the provision of appropriate PPE for employees and contractors, including those in casual employment. (eg. security, cleaners, and construction workers).
When is a risk assessment required for organisations?
It is a legal requirement for organisations employing over 5 or more staff members to carry out documented health and safety risk assessments of all their significant hazards.
Outline a risk assessment?
- HAZARDS - Identify hazards present
- PEOPLE - Identify people at risk from the hazards e.g. employees, visitors
- RISK LEVEL - Evaluate the risk and consider the likelihood and severity of any accidents
- RECORD - Record the findings on a form.
- REVIEW - Review the risk assessment regularly.
- ACTION - Advise those affected of the outcome of the risk assessment and take precautions to minimise or eliminate risk.
What is a method statement?
A document that details the way a work task or process is to be completed and prior approved.
It outlines hazards and a step-by-step guide on how to do the job safely.
It also introduces which measures have been introduced to ensure the safety of anyone who is affected by the task or process.
What documents should be obtained before commencing contractor works?
A copy of their public liability insurance.
What should a company’s written health and safety policy document?
- A policy setting out the organisations commitment to H&S
- Details of the organisation’s H&S structure with roles and responsibilities for organising H&S
- A risk assessment within the workplace and preventative measures in place.
- Details of planning, implementation of H&S policy and control measures.
How do you check if your hard hat is in date?
The date of manufacture is stamped inside the hat. They have a 5-year expiration period, but for heavy use should consider regular replacements.
