What is a hazard?
a potential source of harm that will have a negative health effect on a person or persons.
List 3 environmental hazards
-slippy flooring
-objects in the way of walking
-falling over something
List the types of hazards and an example for each
Biological- waste not disposed of properly
Chemical- Medications left unsupervised
Psychological abuse from patients
Environmental- Slippy flooring
Lack of security systems- no ID checks/ DBS checks
Working conditions- travelling to work late/temperature too hot or cold
Working practices- Nurses not supervising patients
Physical- someone choking on something
Musculoskeletal- Manual handling not done properly

Give an example of how illness can be caused by a hazard
Radiation exposure being too high for radiologists so they get illnesses like cancer or radiation poisoning.
Give an example of how injury/harm can be caused by a hazard
Manual handling being done incorrectly can cause straining injuries to the neck and back.
Give an example of how poor standards of care can be caused by a hazard
Stress can cause people’s decision making to be distorted, so they don’t deliver good standards of care.
Give an example of how financial loss can be caused by a hazard
Medicines being left out and someone consuming them could leave the company at fault if the family presses charges, so they lose money.
Abuse at patients from staff could lead to charges pressed and therefore they lose money.

Sexual abuse- inappropriate forceful behaviours, sexual assault
Emotional abuse-
Verbal abuse- hurtful words shouted at someone
Financial abuse- Stealing someone’s card
Neglect abuse- Not feeding a child properly
Define intentional abuse
The abuse being deliberate/on purpose
Define unintentional abuse
The abuse being accidental or through poor standards of care
