Health, Safety, Environmental Flashcards
What are the most common routes of exposure to toxic and hazardous chemicals?
skin and eye (dermal and ocular) contact, inhalation, ingestion
What is the purpose of the Safety Data Sheet?
Intended to provide comprehensive information about a substance or mixture for
use in workplace chemical management.
What is the difference between Acute Toxicity and Chronic Toxicity?
Acute - harmful effect after a single or short-term exposure. Most common
measure of acute toxicity is LD50 (median lethal dose)
Chronic - characterized by the adverse health effects in an animal or person
which have been caused by exposure to a substance over a significant portion of
that animal’s or person’s life or long-term effects resulting from a single or a few
doses
What are Threshold Limit Values (TLVs)?
Airborne concentrations of substances to workers may be repeatedly exposed day
after day without adverse effect. TLVs are based on industrial experience and
from experimental human and animal studies and a combination of the three
Three categories: Time Weighted Average, Short Term Exposure Limits, Ceiling
What are Permissible Exposure Limits (PELs)?
Legally binding airborne exposure limits issued by the Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) based on TLVs
Which one must be legally adhered to?
PELs (b/c OSHA!)
What did the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act of 1976 install?
National policy on hazardous waste management and disposal.
Where so you go to find WSU’s Safety Resources?
http://www.winona.edu/safety/resources.asp
Every company must comply to the OSHA Hazard Communication Standard
(HCS or Right to Know). What does this entail having on file?
i. Written plan detail how to handle harardous materials.
ii. Labels and warnings (http://www.dli.mn.gov/OSHA/PDF/ertk_gi.pdf)
iii. Employee training, Personal Protective Equipment
iv. Safety Data Sheets
