Health & Safety Flashcards
What is the HSE?
The Health and Safety Executive is the national independent watchdog for work-related health issues. It acts in the public interest to reduce work related deaths and serious injuries.
Please define what service the HSE provides to improve safety?
The HSE is there to protect people’s health and safety by ensuring risks in the changing workplace are properly controlled. The HSE helps businesses adapt to changes in occupational health & safety law.
Q) What is a Construction Phase Health & Safety Plan?
It outlines the plan for the how the work will be completed safely. It will include aspects of the project, the type of work, the team and emergency arrangements. The document will identify key health & safety risks associated with the construction phase and the control measures that will be implemented to minimise risks or eliminate them.
What is the Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS)?
It is a non-profit organisation that encourages contractors and their supply chain to implement best practice and to raise standards. The scheme focuses on respecting the community, caring for the environment, valuing the workforce.
When you last visited a construction site, what actions did you take to maintain your own health and safety?
Wearing PPE, Attending site inductions and adhering to the site rules, reporting potential safety issues to site management, following pedestrian routes.
If you are going to complete a site visit on your own, what should you do before leaving the office?
Inform my manager where I’m going and when I expect to leave site, carry out pre-assessment of the hazards and risks that are likely to be encountered on site, make the site manager aware of my visit and wear PPE.
What is a CSCS card?
Construction Skills Certification Scheme. CSCS cards are a tool to ensure those working on construction sites are fully qualified and trained for their role.
A member of the public has been injured by work activities and is taken to hospital for treatment. What should happen next?
Accidents involving members of the public, or others who are not at work, must be reported to the HSE if they result in an injury and the person is taken directly from the scene of the accident to hospital for treatment for that injury. Examinations and diagnostic tests do not constitute ‘treatment’. Site management should investigate the cause of the accident and take steps to prevent reoccurrence.
The site has been issued a prohibition notice by the HSE. What does this mean?
If the HSE inspector believes that work activities give rise to a risk of serious personal injury, they may issue a prohibition notice. The prohibition notice normally requires work to immediately stop and not resume until action has been taken.
What should you do if you find an injured person on site?
Identify and mitigate potential dangers, raise the alarm, make sure the area is safe, call for emergency services.
What is asbestos?
Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibrous material found in rocks and soil. Because of its fibre strength and heat resistance, asbestos was widely used in building materials for insulation and as a fire retardant.
What are the different types of asbestos surveys available?
Management survey – the purpose of the management survey is to manage asbestos-containing materials during the normal occupation and use of premises.
Refurbishment/demolition survey – The R&D survey is required where the premise, or part of it, need upgrading, refurbishment, or demolition.
What are the 3 most common types of asbestos?
Crocidolite – Blue in colour, considered the most lethal form.
Amosite – brown in colour, second most common and second deadliest
Chrysotile – white long, curly fibres. Most common type used in industrial and commercial applications.
What would you do if you unexpectedly found asbestos on site?
Stop work immediately and ensure the area is safe. Report the matter to the site manager; there maybe a requirement to notify the HSE. The asbestos will need to be tested by a competent contractor to identify the type.
What is the name of the regulations (introduced by the HSE) that govern asbestos in the UK?
Control of Asbestos Regulations (2012).
Are you aware of any professional standards issued by RICS associated with asbestos?
Asbestos – 4th edition 2021
Where is asbestos commonly found in older buildings?
Cement gutters, corrugated roofs, floor and ceiling tiles, insulated boards
What is an asbestos management plan?
Crucial document designed to register and detail how asbestos will be managed in a property and what activities will be engaged to ensure people remain safe from asbestos exposure.
What information might a typical asbestos management plan include?
The party responsible for managing asbestos (duty holder), the asbestos register, identifying type and location, the schedule for monitoring the materials condition, communication strategy for new employees/maintenance work, contingency plans, emergency arrangements.
When asbestos is found, what are the different methods for managing the material?
Remove – eliminate the risk for future building users. Encapsulate – applying a protective layer onto the asbestos containing the material. Manage – set up an asbestos management plan.
What does RAMS stand for?
Risk assessment and method statement
