Review Erikson’s Psychosocial Development for the preschool child.
A
Initiative vs Guilt 3 to 5 years
Children take initiative by planning activities and attempting new tasks.
Parents need to encourage the child to become more independent while at the same time protecting the child so that constant failure is avoided.
Caregivers who are discouraging
or dismissive may cause children to feel ashamed of themselves (guilt) and become overly dependent.
