What is the aim of the political approach of health promotion?
To bring about changes in the physical, social and economic environment which will affect health.
What are some advantages of the political approach?
Encourages self-responsibility and empowerment
Can have a wide scope
Recognises wider socio-economic determinants of health and that factors affecting health aren’t always under the individuals control.
Can be democratic.
What are some disadvantages of the political approach to health promotion?
May force changes by compulsion not by changing attitude
Cannot influence lifestyle choices.
May be authoritarian and paternalistic.
What is the aim of the client centred approach?
The client centred approach aims to improve health by working with individuals on their own terms.
What are some advantages of the client centred approach?
encourages the client to take responsibility for their own health, works on the clients own terms
What is health?
Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity
What is the aim of the holistic approach?
The holistic approach looks at the mental, physical, emotional, social and spiritual aspects of health
What are the disadvantages of the client centred approach?
The client needs to identify the issue first
The client may feel there are no issues,
May decide no action needs to be taken
What is the aim of the medical approach?
it is targeted towards whole populations or high-risk groups
Seeks to increase medical interventions which will prevent ill health or early death
What are the advantages of the medical approach?
based on facts, expert led, preventative, can reach large audiences, can lead to changes in behaviour
What are the disadvantages of the medical approach
can be negative in emphasis, assumes people with change behaviour which is simplistic,
What is the aim of the educational approach?
To provide knowledge and information, in order to encourage the development of necessary skills
Individuals can make informed choices about their health behaviour

Empowers the whole community
Enhances skills, shapes the health of the environment,
assumes the persons health is related to their socio economic status

empowers and involves people in decision making,
recognises wider determinants of health
avoids victim blaming,
addresses inequalities in health
What are the disadvantages of the community development approach
Ineffective in long term as no changes in socio-economic structure,
depends on social interaction of people

What are 4 principles of good practice?
adequate needs assessment
relevance + sensitivity
using research+ undertaking evaluation
accurate + appropriate information
due regard to confidentiality and the requirements
What is quantitative data?
It is numerical and the data is usually gathered by asking closed questions or limiting responses (yes no questions or surveys with agree/disagree etc)
can be analysed and put into graphs and charts
What is qualitative data?
It is non-numerical
it’s rich in detail and describes opinions and attitudes
the data is difficult to analyse or put into charts/graphs
it is gathered through the asking of open ended questions, conducting interviews or detailed surveys
What is primary research?
Data that you have collected yourself and is unique to you
what is secondary research?
collected from primary sources (other peoples research)
