Aid dependency
The level to which a country cannot perform many of it’s basic functions of government without overseas aid
Apartheid
The enforced segregation of people by skin colour or ethnicity. This policy was used in South Africa between 1948 and 1991
Colonialism
Where an external nation takes direct control of a territory, often by force.
Democracy aid
The allocation of funds to other countries for democracy-building
Proxy war
A war instigated by a major power that is not always directly involved in the fighting.
PPP
Relates average earnings in a country to local prices and what they will buy. It is the spending power within a country, and reflects local cost of living. It’s the spending power within a country, and reflects local costs of living.
Schegen agreement
An agreement which abolished many of the internal border controls within the EU and enabked passport-free movement across most EU member states.
Sectoral sanctions
penalties that are imposed on targeted areas in another country, such as energy, banking, finance, defence and technology.
Structural adjustment programmes (SAPs)
policies imposed by the IMF which forced the state to play a reduced part in the economy and in social welfare, in return fo re-arranging loans at adjusted rates of interest, and at more affordable repayments.
sub-prime lending
The lending by banks to low-income earners with secure jobs, who could never normally afford mortgages.
SDGs
a set of goals, launched in september 2015, to be achieved by 2030 and designed to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure prosperity for all.
Trade embargo
A government or international ban that restricts trade with a particular country.
Unilateral actions
one country, or group of countries, acting against another, for example, without formal UN approval.
Washington consensus
A belief that economic efficiency can only be achieved if regulations are removed.
