HSE
Secondary Health science Education Programs
• Prepare students for immediate employment in many health careers.
• Prepare students for additional education after graduation.
Associate Degree
• Awarded by a career/technical school or community college.
• Requires completion of prescribed two-year course of study.
Bachelor’s Degree
• Awarded by college or university.
• Requires completion of prescribed course of study that usually lasts for four or more years.
Master’s Degree
• Awarded by college or university
• Requires completion of one or more years beyond Bachelor’s Degree
Certification, Registration, Licensure
• Methods used to ensure the skill and competency of health care personnel and protect a consumer or patient.
Certification
•Issued by professional association or government agency that regulates a particular career.
• Certificate or statement is issued if person fulfills requirements of education and performance and meets standards and qualifications established.
Registration
• Done by regulatory body (professional associations or state boards) in a health careers area.
• Administer examinations and maintain current list of qualified personnel.
Licensure
• Government agency authorizes individuals to work in a given occupation.
• Complete an approved educational program and pass a state board test.
• Usually graduation from an accredited program required before certification, registration, and/or licensure will be granted.
CEUs
Continuing Education Units
• Required to renew licenses or to maintain certification or registration in many states.
• Individual must obtain additional hours of education in the specific health careers area career during a specific period of time.
Code of Ethics
• Code of behavior for the profession
Professional
• Usually requires four or more years of college and an advanced degree.
Technologist or therapist
• Requires three to four years of college in addition to work experience.
Technician
• Usually requires two-year associate degree, special health science technology education, or three to four years of on-the-job training.
Assistant or aide
• Usually requires one to two years in HSE program, Associate’s Degree, or two to four years of on-the-job training.
Entrepreneur
• Individual who organizes, manages, and assumes the risk of a business.
Therapeutic Services Standards
• Involved in charging the health status of the patient over time.
Diagnostic Serviced Standards
• Involved with creating a picture of the health status of a patient at a single point in time.
Health Informatics Standards
• Involved with the documentation of patient care.
Support Services Standards
• Involved with creating a therapeutic environment to provide direct or indirect patient care.
Biotechnology research and development careers
• Involved in bioscience research and development.
• Involved with using living cells to make useful products.
DMD or DDS
Dentists
• Doctors who examine the teeth and mouth tissues to diagnose and treat disease and abnormalities; perform corrective surgery on the teeth, gums, tissues, and supporting bones; and work to prevent dental disease.
DH
Dental Hygienist
Endodontics
• Treatment of disease of the pump, nerves, blood vessels, and roots of the teeth.
Orthodontics
• Alignment or straitening of the teeth.
