What is the meaning of a diagnosis?
it is the process by which we determine the nature of a condition to distinguish it from the rest
Define health
a state of complete physical mental and social wellbeing
What does a diagnosis do for a patient?
gives them reassurance to validate their behaviour, gives the expectation that they can be treated, it may bring with it a stigma and impact their sense of self, people around the patient may also see them as less
What do we mean by illness cognitions ?
Patients own common sense beliefs about their own illness
What are the 5 cognitive dimensions of illness cognitions
Identity, perceived cause, time line, consequences and curability and controllability
What does Leventhal’s self regulatory model of illness behaviour state?
common sense beliefs influence the perceptions of their own illness and in turn influence how they think and feel about their illness which in turn influences how they cope with it
What does self regulate mean?
When we are trying to get back to normal health
What are the features of Leventhal’s self regulatory model of illness behaviour ?
Representation of a health threat. Stage 1 interpretation Stage 2 coping Stage 3 appraisal. Emotional response to health threat.
What is Locus of control ?
The degree to which individuals perceive themselves as being in control of a situation. Internal LOC people feel responsible , external they do not.
What is the belief of the powerful others?
When individuals believe their state is determined by the actions of the powerful others, for example a healthcare worker.
What relevance does self efficacy have in health care?
It has been shown to be important in the delivery of healthcare, in rehab, in behaviour change and maintenance , as healthcare workers we should help patients develop good self efficacy.
What is Learned helplessness
a perceived lack of control “ we can’t change our negative fate”, generalised helpless behaviour in response to failure
What is Self efficacy ?
situation specific self confidence which can be gained by vicarious modelling of behaviour and verbal reassurance
