Health Behaviour and Beliefs Flashcards
Explain the link between positive consequences and behaviour
If the consequences are positive, the behaviour is likely to be repeated
Explain the link between aversive consequences and behaviour
If the consequences are aversive, it is less likely to be repeated
Explain the link between fear arousal and compliance
Fear arousal inversely related to compliance
What is observational learning?
We observe the behaviours of others and the consequences of those behaviours
What is vicarious reinforcement?
If their behaviours are reinforced we tend to imitate the behaviours
What is the 5 factor health belief model?
- General health values
- Threat to health posed by problem
- Belief in personal vulnerability
- Belief in response efficacy
- Belief in self efficacy
What is the expectancy value theory?
The potential for a behaviour to occur in any specific situation is a function of the expectancy that the behaviour will lead to a particular outcome and the value of that outcome
What is outcome efficacy?
Individuals expectation that the behaviour will lead to a particular outcome
What is efficacy expectancy?
Belief that one can execute the behaviour required to produce the outcome
What are some factors influencing self-efficacy? (3)
- Mastery experience
- Social learning
- Visual persuasion or encouragement
What is the theory of reasoned action?
Highlights the importance of attitudes, attitude formation and intentions to change behaviour
According to the theory of reasoned action what is the most important determinant?
Intention is the most important determinant
