Health: Barefoot Doctors Flashcards
Why was the work of the late barefoot doctors disrupted during the late 1950s and Cultural Revolution?
Many doctors were labelled as bourgeois while others were denounced during the Cultural Revolution.
Who were the barefoot doctors? How did they get this name?
Young people who were sent by villages to receive basic medical training.
How much training did the barefoot doctors receive? What skills did they gain?
They hardly had any training, they learnt through practice. They could only provide rudimentary healthcare and the village clinic had little equipment and low supplies of medicine.
How many barefoot doctors were trained by 1973?
Over a million.
How successful was this scheme?
It provided the best healthcare many rural peasants had ever had. They played a part in challenging the traditional practices and spreading modern medical knowledge and basic care to rural areas.
