What is a hazard?
A potential source of harm or adverse health effect.
What are the 9 types of hazards?
Environmental, Biological, Chemical, Physical, Psychological, Working conditions, Working practices, Lack of security, Musculoskeletal.
Potential Impacts of Hazards
Injury or harm, Illness, Poor standards of care, Financial Loss.
Intentional Abuse definition
Harm and abuse towards an individual which is deliberate.
Unintentional Abuse definition
Harm and abuse which can be unintentional by poor care.
What is legislation?
A law or set of laws that have been passed by Parliament.
What are the acts/regulations?
Health and Safety Act, Management of Health and Safety Work Regulations, Manual Handling, Reporting of Injuries Diseases and Dangerous Occupations, Control of Hazardous substances to health, Civil Contingencies Act, Food Safety Act, Food Safety (general hygiene) regulations.
Guess the legislation- It uses a list to prevent incidents. It is a basis of all Health and Safety rules. Outlines responsibilities for both employers & employees.
Health and Safety at Work Act (1974)
Guess the legislation- It outlines what employees are required to do to manage health and safety. The employer needs to employ someone to oversee implications. Employees must receive training.
Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations (1999)
Guess the legislation-It is an obligation to treat food for its human intent. Businesses cannot remove or include anything in the food. Any company involved in preparing, distributing food must meet requirements.
Food Safety Act (1990)
Guess the legislation-Any property which prepares food needs to be registered. Food handlers need to be instructed and trained in food hygiene. Requires the food safety hazards to be identified and wear proper PPE.
Food Safety (general hygiene) Regulations (1995)
Guess the legislation- Carers responsibility in the work place to reduce risks of injury. Avoid hazardous manual handling , assess injury to employees. Training must be provided.
Manual Handling Operations Act (1992)
Guess the legislation-Employees must report and keep records for 3 years of all work related incidents. All work settings must have procedures in place to report incidents, diseases, injuries. Employers must provide information on how to safely carry out work activities.
Reporting of Injuries, diseases, dangerous occurrences and regulations. (RIDDOR)
Guess the legislation- Employers must carry out risk assessments to control exposure to health hazards. Employers must have procedures in place for safe working with hazardous substances. Employers must provide PPE and training.
Control of Hazardous substances to health. (COSHH)
Guess the legislation- Every community must have procedures in place to respond to local emergencies or national emergencies.
