What is violence
The use of physical force against yourself, another person, a group or a community
What are the causes of violence
Death

What are common acts of violence
- Physical: An action that causes injury, pain or leaves a mark
- Neglet: the failure to provide basic need such as food, shelter, love, education
- sexual: any sexual contact between an adult and a child younger than 16 or any unwanted act of sexual nature
- Psychological: difficult to identify because there are usually no physical signs, emotional abuse is a contributing factor, even bullying
What are reasons for violence occurring
- Gender inequality: violence against women/girls due to females being thought as weaker/inferior
- Poverty: people are struggling + feel desperate to resort to violence to survive
- Abuse of alcohol and other substances: abuse of these substances can cause people to become violent
- Frustration and lack of opportunity: people see no future for themselves and have no purpose, turn to violence out of frustration
- Difficulty communicating: people may find it difficult to express themselves and it can spill over to violence
- Being exposed to violence: People often learn by copying others and believe violence is used to solve issues
What is the impact of violence on the community and on the individual
Community:
- Economic = no development
no housing
increased cost to government
- Social = people don’t trust each other
Unpleasant community and unhappy members
Individual:
- Physical = injuries and possible death
loss of abilities/limbs
- social = victims may have difficulty trusting
may resent people around them
- Psychological = unpleasant emotions of anger, embarrassment or confusion
