What information should be included on a food label?
- Best before date
- List of ingredients
- Name of the manufacturer
- Address of manufacturer
- Name of the food and a brief description of the food

- Special dietary needs of the food e.g. Vegan

What is the trades description act?
A criminal offence to falsely describe goods or services
E.G. Frozen food can’t be called fresh.
What are the legal obligations of employers?
- Take responsibility for the health and safety of employees
- To provide safe areas to work in
- Safety and maintenance of machinery and tools
- Good ventilation, lighting and temperature control
- Easy evacuation and exit routes
- Risk assessment
What are the legal obligations of employees?
- To take reasonable care of their own health and safety
- To take reasonable care of other peoples health and safety
- Not to misuse equipment, machinery or premises
What does the Health and Safety Executive law state every establishment must have?
- Provide a written health and safety policy
- Assess risks to employees, customers, partners and any other people who could be affected by their activities
- Arrange for the effective planning, organisation, control, monitoring and review of preventive and protective measures
- Ensure they have access to competent health and safety advice
- Consult employees about risks at work and current preventive and protective measures

They have a black symbol in a blue circle. E.g No smoking

A white symbol on a green background. E.g Fire exit

How do you prevent accidents on the floor?
- Mop up any spills immediately
- Keep floors clean and grease free
- Do not leave equipment in pathways
- Repair damaged floor surfaces quickly
How to prevent accidents with knives?
- Use the right sized knife for the food you are cutting
- Keep handles clean and grease free
- Keep knives sharp
- Don’t leave knives on edge of chopping boards or tables
- Don’t put knives in washing up bowls or point up in dishwashers
- Don’t try to catch a falling knife
How to prevent accidents with electrical equipment?
- Check machinery is in good working order
- Check electrical wires are not frayed or worn
- Do not handle electrical equipment with wet hands
- Check safety notice
- Assemble equipment correctly and use safety guards
