Personal protective equipment e.g. gloves masks overalls
What is occupational health?
Promotion and maintenance of physical, mental and social wellbeing of workers
What is biosafety?
Measures taken to reduce/eliminate exposure to hazardous biological agents
Both people and environment
What is biosecurity?
Measures taken to prevent the introduction/spread of infectious disease
What are the 3 main types of waste?
Healthcare waste
Hazardous waste
Non-hazardous waste
What is healthcare waste?
Waste from a healthcare establishment
What is hazardous waste?
Waste that is harmful to people or the environment
E.g. cytotoxic, sharps, infectious waste
What is non-hazardous waste?
Offensive, pharmaceutical or domestic waste
What colour bin should cytotoxic waste go in? Give examples. What happens to this waste?
Purple
Cytotoxic = Toxic to living cells, carcinogenic, mutagenic substances including bottles, swabs etc
Incinerated
What colour bin does highly infectious clinical waste go in? Give examples and disposal
Yellow
Sharps contaminated with non cytotoxic medicines, infectious bodily fluids
Incinerated
SHARPS- note is syringe this is BLUE not yellow as not sharp

Orange/ organe lid yellow tub
Giving sets.

Anything unpleasant to the senses except clinical or hazardous waste e.g. faeces and contaminated bedding
