A

Staff are responsible to maintain the environment safe. Setting adheres to health and safety policies and procedures. There needs to be a written policy in place if you have 5 or more employees. Adequate training needs to be provided

Health, Safety and Welfare Act

A

Ensure the environment is not safe and the premises are adequate for the purpose of the setting, including space and equipment. There must be provisions for staff (toilets for staff, sinks to wash hands etc.). The environment must be kept safe, for example with maintenance and PAT testing.

Personal Protective
Equipment (PPE) 2018

A

Training has to be given on PPE and how to use it. Employers must have a risk assessment in place if PPE is used. PPE must be CE (it’s the certification that the equipment is suitable, safe, robust to use) marked and suitable to meet individual needs (ex. All sizes available for everyone to use it).
Duty for employee to use the training provided to wear and use the PPE effectively, and report any damages. PPE must be stored properly.

Management of health and
safety at work Regulations

A

It’s about health and safety are managed: for example: is adequate training provide to all staff? there needs to be a competent person that manages health and safety (a Health and Safety Lead); there need to be suitable emergency procedures, for example fire or lockdown procedures.

RIDDOR 2013

A

Required only when the accident or incidents are work related and they result in a reportable injury or occurrence. This law gives a time frame within which these must be reported. Responsible person only should report RIDDOR: injuries lasting more than 7 days: within 15 days; death: immediately; diseases: ASAP.

COSHH (=control of substances hazardous to health)

A

These regulations were created In 1999 and amended In 2002 to include EU directives. Employers are required to control exposure to hazardous substances to protect health. This is done when risk of harm is “as low as reasonably practicable”.
COSHH does not cover nuclear, asbestos and lead (there are separate regulations for that).

Health protection in schools and other childcare facilities (Guidance)

A

Guidance to prevent and control the spread of infections with info on how to respond to an infection
and how to seek advice. Exclusion periods, how to clean the environment, sanitary cleanliness;
If there is an outbreak (3 or more cases) of illness or infection, contact the Local Health Protection team (HPT) and they will guide for next steps.

A

section 3 is for safeguarding and welfare requirement, and health and safety links to these areas.
 Procedures to deal with infections and illnesses
 Staff must report any medications they take that may affect their work;
 Procedures in place for administering medications to children
 The environment has to be safe and with suitable equipment (risk assessments to reduce risks, electrical equipment needs to be suitable);
 First aid boxes with correct and in date content should be accessible at all times;
 Keep appropriate records of accidents and incidents;
 Food must be prepared hygienically in dedicated areas, and staff who handles food must have a food hygiene certificate.
