Health and Safety relates to regulations and procedures intended to prevent accidents or injuries in work places or public environments

Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 - this is the primary piece of legislation covering Health and Safety in the UK

Sets out the general duties Which
- Employers have towards employees and members of the public
- Employees have to themselves and to each other
- Self-employed have to themselves and others
How do you ensure you comply with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974?
- Follow the training I have received when using any work items
- Take reasonable care of my own and other peoples Health and Safety
- Co-operate with my employer re Health and Safety
- Tell someone/Report if you think the work has inadequate precautions putting you at risk

What is the ‘Safe Person’ Concept?
Each individual assumes individual behavioral responsibility for their own, their collegues and others health and safety at work.
what is the objective of the Safe Person?
- To ensure the individuals who work in all environments, including those presenting higher risks - ARE SAFE and REMAIN HEALTHY at all times
- The individual concerned accept the prime responsibility for their own well-being

What is Lone Working?
Lone working refers to working alone, an employee who preforms an activity that is carried out in isolation from other workers without close or direct supervision.
How do you manage the risks of lone working
- Refer and comply with my works lone working policy
- Leave written details of where i am going - electronically and paper
- Tell people who i am going to meet
- Tell staff what time i am expected back in the office
- Carry a fully charged phone with me at all times
- Have a point of contact
- Carry a first aid kit in my car
- Report anything to the firm
What happened in the case of Suzy Lamplugh
Suzy was an estate agent, who during her work was showing a client around a house in Fulham when she disapered in 1986.
Suzy was lone working and her body was never found
She was pronounced dead in 1993
Why is the Case of Suzy Lamplugh important for surveyors
We as surveyors meet unknown clients everyday and often do this alone]

What is PPE?
Protective clothing, helments, goggles or other garments or equipment designed to protect our body from injury or infection.
When have you used PPE on an inspection
EXAMPLE - A40 Road Scheme
When visiting client on the scheme i am required to wear PPE at all times. This includes Hi-vis, Steel toe caps or appropriate footwear and Helmet

What is a Risk Assessment?
Is a term used to describe the process where you
- IDENTIFY hazards and RISK FACTORS that have the potential to cause harm
- Analyse and evaluate the risk associated with that hazard
- Determine the appropriate ways to eliminate the hazard or control the risk where you cannot eliminate it
Why are Risk Assessments important?
They help to:
- Create Awareness of Hazards and Risks
- Identify who may at risk
- Determine whether a control program is required
- Determine if an existing control measure is adequate
- They prevent injuries or ilnesses
- meet legal requirements when required
When should a Risk Assessment be done?
- Before new activities are undertaken
- Before changes are introduced
- When hazards are identified
