Health and P.E Level 1 Flashcards
roughly how many bones are there in a human?
200
what provides movement to the skeleton?
muscles and tendons
what shields the internal organs?
the skeleton
what does the skeleton provide?
support and shape
what happens to the bone when the muscle contracts?
it moves in the direction of the contraction
where are white and red blood cells found? and what do they do?
they are found in the bones and the which fights of infections and the red carries oxygen
how many vertebrae are in the cervical spine? and where are the cervical vertebrae located?
7 and by the neck area
how many vertebrae are in the thoracic spine? and where are the thoracic vertebrae located?
12 and down the middle of your back
how many vertebrae are in the lumbar spine? and where are the cervical lumbar located?
5 and by your lower back
what are the last two bones of the spine located and called?
by the bum and called the sacrum and coccyx
what are the three main types of joints called?
fibrous, cartilaginous and synovial
an example of a fibrous joint
the skull - no movement
an example of a synovial joint
the knee - very movable
an example of a cartilaginous joint
the pubic symphysis - little movement
what makes up a synovial joint?
articular cartilage articular capsule ligaments Meniscus bursae
what does the articular cartilage do?
it covers the joining, protects the bone tissue and reduces friction
what does the articular capsule do?
it surrounds the joint creating stability and stopping unwanted material from entering and provides a cavity for the synovial fluid
what do the ligaments do?
stability and movement
what does the meniscus do?
creates a shock-absorbing pad and to maintain stability
what do the bursae do?
sacs filled with synovial fluid they reduce friction when tendons rub over them
what are the different types of joints?
ball and socket hinge joint condyloid joint saddle joint plane joint
