What are the seven key nutrients?
Carbohydrates, Proteins, fibre, water, vitamins, minerals, lipids
What are carbohydrates for?
To give my body energy
What are vitamins and minerals for?
Needed in tiny amounts to keep my body healthy
What are proteins for?
Needed for growth and repair of cells
What are lipids (fats) for?
Needed for energy and to keep the body warm
What is fibre for?
Needed to keep food moving through the system
Why is it unhealthy to be underweight?
Less energy
Not enough fat to keep you warm
You can get many different illnesses
Lack of nutrients
Poor immune system
Suffer from anorexia, rickets
Why is it unhealthy to be overweight?
Heart disease, diabeties, stokes, some cancers
No balanced diet
What do you use to test for starch? (carbohydrates)
Iodine solution
If solution turns black, there are carbohydrates
test for sugar?
Use benedicts solution
If solution turns orange/brown, there are sugars
Test for protein
Add biurets solution
If solution turns violet, there are proteins
Test for fats (lipids)
Add ethanol and some water
if solution goes cloudy, there are fats
The digestive system
Mouth, oesophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, rectum, anus.
What are digestive enzymes?
Digestive enzymes are the chemicals that break large insoluble food molecules into smaller soluble food molecules.
What is carbohydrase?
Breaks down carbs into smaller sugars. It is digested in the mouth, stomach, large intestine
Protease?
Breaks proteins into amino acid. Broken down in the stomach + small intestine
Lipase?
Breaks fat into fatty acids + glycerol. 3 fatty acid chains made.
What are drugs?
Drugs are substances that affect the natural chemical processes in our bodies
What are recreational drugs?
Used by people for pleasure
What are medicinal drugs?
Used by people who suffer from diseases
What are the withdrawal symptoms of not having drugs when addicted?
Headaches, anxiety, sweating
What is a stimulant?
Drug that excites bodily functions. They make you more alert.
What is a depressant?
Drugs that slows down bodily functions
What are harmful effects of alcohol?
Stomach ulcers
Heart disease
Brain + liver damage
