Provides bulk to food to keep it moving through the gut (not actually a nutrient)
What are enzymes?
Enzymes are special proteins that can break large molecules of nutrients down into small molecules

Biological catalysts
What does carbohydrase do?
Digests carbohydrates into sugars
What does protease do?
Digest protein into amino acids
What does lipase do?
Digests lipids into fatty acids and glycerol
Where does mechanical digestion take place?
The mouth
How do you test for starch?
Add a few drops of iodine
How do you know if a starch test is positive?
If it turns blue-black
How do you test for sugar?
Add a few drops of benedicts solution and heat in a water bath
How do you know if the sugar test is positive?
If the solution turns orange-red
How do you test for lipids?
Add a few drops of ethanol, shake and leave for one minute. Then poor the ethanol into a test tube of water.
How do you know this the lipids test is positive?
It will turn cloudy
How to test if a food has proteins?
Add a few drops of coppper sulfate solution and sodium hydroxide solution
How to see if a protein test is positive?
If it turns purple
