Healing Response in Acute and Chronic Wounds Flashcards
Category 1 healing
Primary intention
Clean surgical incision - resolves in orderly, sequenced manner over course of approx. 2 weeks
Category 2 healing
Delayed Primary Intention
Wound edges are not approximated because of concern for pathogens or debris
Category 3 healing
Secondary Intention
Category 4 healing
relates to partial thickness skin wounds
Acute wound healing is broken down into what phases
- Hemostasis
- Inflammation
- Proliferation
- Remodeling
Hemostasis (phase 1):
Clot formation
BVs VC initially
Coagulation of platelets forms a mechanical trap for pathogens - initiating transition to pro-inflammatory environment
Inflammation (phase 2):
Rubor (redness), Tumor (swelling), Calor (heat), Dolor (pain)
Recruitment of neutrophils, leukocytes, macrophages and release of growth factors and pro-inflammatory cytokines
Proliferation (phase 3):
4 subphases: Angiogenesis Fibroplasia (laying down new collagen) Matrix Deposition Re-Epithelialization
