Q

What is the Nuchal Crest?

A

Extension of the skull to which the the neck muscles attach onto. These muscles position, move and stabilize the head and the cervical vertebrae.

Q

Shape of Teeth Trend?

A

Chimps have a more robust (strong), rectangular shaped jaw. The post canine teeth are parallel. Modern humans have a parabolic, wider dental arcade with smaller teeth and less robust mandibles. This is because of the diet difference from tough vegetation to soft meat and cooked food.

Q

Chin and Simian shelf trend?

A

Apes have a pronounced “shelf” behind the chin region (simian shelf) but lack any protuberance forward of the chin. Human mandibles are rounded and have a protruding chin but lack the shelf.

Q

Prognathism Trend?

Q

Sagittal Crest Trend?

A

Chimp: Present
Human: Absent
The substantial jaw muscles needed to move the large robust mandible are attached here. This is not necessary in humans due to the difference in diet.

Q

Canines Trend?

A

Chimps: Larger with associated diastema
Humans: Reduced
Canines are used by chimpanzees to display dominance and aggression, while humans use less aggression displays. There is also less sexual dimorphism in humans.

16
Q

Zygomatic arch and Brow Ridge trend?

A

Chimps: Thick, wide bone structure, very prominent
Humans: Reduced, finer
Less chewing needed for humans, diet difference. Need more structure in chimps to prevent tension fractures.

17
Q

Foreman Magnum trend?

A

Chimps: Towards the real, angled back
Humans: Central, angled down
With bipedulism with humans, less neck muscles to hold help upright. Chimps spine enters horizontally, so more nuchal muscles.

18
Q

Broca’s and Wernicke’s areas trend

A

Chimps: None
Humans: There
The Broca co-ordinates with muscular movement for speech and the Wernicke’s is responsible for language comprehension.

19
Q

Cerebral Cortex trend?

A

Chimps: Less fold
Humans: More fold
Related to memory, attention, language, awareness, thought, etc. More developed and complex in humans

20
Q

Cerebellum trend?

A

Chimps: Less
Humans: More developed
Need for balance, co-ordination and tool use
